Below is some information on how to apply for a passport, adults and kids requirements and costings. You should be aware that different countries require different passport validity requirements for permitting entry. Passport application forms can be completed and printed online here, but not lodged. You will need to sign the completed application form in black ink, provide two new colour photographs of yourself (with your name printed on the back of one photo) and all supporting documents requested on the application form. Adult application and renewal forms should be personally lodged by the applicant at an Australia Post outlet. Child passport applications should be lodged by a parent/person with a parental responsibility for the child.
If you intend to lodge a passport application directly with an Australian Passport Office you must call 131 232 first to make an appointment. The appointment system is designed to improve the delivery of passport client services to the general public.
Children's Passports
An Australian citizen under 18 years of age who has never married is regarded as a child. A passport application for a child must be lodged by a parent or other person with a parental responsibility for the child. The person lodging the application should bring proof of their identity. Children cannot be included in an adult's passport. Each child, including a newborn infant, must be issued with their own passport. A renewal form cannot be used to apply for a child's passport. A new application must be lodged on each occasion. If you are lodging an application for a child overseas, you must complete the Overseas application form.
NOTE: Children's passports are normally valid for five years. Adult passports have a validity of 10 years.
How long does it take to get a passport?
The Australian Passport Office is committed to mailing out an eligible applicant's passport within ten working days of receiving all information and documentation we require. However, you should allow extra time for Australia Post outlets to forward your application and for your passport to reach you by registered mail. This can add between two and eight days to the ten working days needed for processing.
Delays may be encountered if supporting information and documentation are not supplied at interview. Child passports will take longer to process if full parental consent is not provided.
