New Caledonia is the Australian east coast’s closest neighbour. This collection of tropical islands, a French territory in the Pacific feels a world away. European and Melanesian cultures have combined to form a unique destination. French cuisine, pure white beaches and the culture and traditions of the native Kanak people. Close enough to visit for a long weekend or spend a week or more and explore. Stunning beaches, crystal clear water, accommodation choices, great food, hundreds of islands and lagoons and a strong French culture .. these are just some of the reasons New Caledonia should be on your families travel bucket list.

It’s just a two to three-hour flight from Australia – if you’re flying direct to the capital Noumea it’s just two hours from Brisbane, three hours from Sydney and 4 hours from Melbourne. Perfect for the families.

The official currency of New Caledonia is the Comptoirs Francais du Pacifique francs, or CFP franc. US dollars, the euro and Australian and New Zealand dollars may be accepted in some shops and restaurants but the exchange rate is often unfavourable. Money can be changed at banks or bureau de change offices. ATM's are readily available in Noumea and give you local currency.

New Caledonia had a reputation for being an expensive tourist destination compared to other neighbouring South Pacific destinations. However the Australian dollar is now stonger against the Pacific franc and consequently
its now a more affordable holiday destination. There is accommodation available to suit every budget.

French Food - New Caledonia is a French territory and you'll be spoilt for choice if you love French gourmet food. In Noumea there are hundreds of snack bars, cafés and restaurants all offering a mix of European and Asian cuisines.

The main language in New Caledonia is French. New Caledonia also has 28 Kanak languages and 11 dialects. English is spoken in the touristic areas only.

Water activities – the crystal clear waters of the archipelago offer spectacular marine life. Snorkelling, surfing, kite surfing, wind surfing, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, stand up paddle boarding or jet skiing are all available. Join a fishing charter, spend days just relaxing on the beach or take in a boat cruise to a lagoon or island. This water lovers paradise has something for everyone.

Less tourists – New Caledonia is a secluded nation. Tourism is welcomed but the visitor neighbours are small compared to many South Pacific destinations. You’ll meet friendly locals that are happy to share their everyday life.

Forever spring – enjoy perfect weather the whole year with temperatures ranging from 15 to 32 degrees Celsius most days. Grab your bikinis ...

Shopping – New Caledonia has the best shopping areas in the Pacific with boutiques selling French designer wears, jewellery, crafts, wines and souvenirs. Rue de l’Alma is Noumea’s most popular shopping spot. Art galleries and antique shops are also available.

Island Hopping – There are so many islands and lagoons to visit, take a day trip or stay a few days. Isle of Pines is a remote island that offers serene paradise, scenic beaches and pine trees. Ouvéa offers a long white sand strip. Lifou’s caves including Grotto D'Avio and The Devil's Cave. Each island in the archipelago has so much to offer.

Accommodation - There are several great options for families large or small in Nomeau. Resorts offer restaurants, bars, swimming pools, water sports, kids activities and more.
