Mission Beach is a great place for the family to enjoy gentle rainforest walks.  You have a good chance of seeing Cassowaries in the wild here.  Speak to the local visitors centre of your accommodation hosts about the best places to see Cassowaries. 

Families will enjoy the gorgeous beaches year round however you will need to swim within stinger nets in the warmer months.  Once again seek information from locals on whether it is stinger season.  A day trip to Dunk island is a great chance to see the corals and fish of the Great Barrier Reef.  Dunk Island has a resort and excellent day facilities.
