Ayers rock is located approx 4 1/2 hours south west of Alice Springs. The traditional name is Uluru, and it is the worlds largest monolith (meaning single rock) You are still able to climb Ayers Rock but the aboriginals do advise against it. It is a good workout and not great for littlies. Parents will need to judge whether thier child is physically capable and responsible enough to listen to instructions, as a fall could be fatal. Viewing sunrise and sunset is a good option, or perhaps a camel or Harley ride. The Olgas or Kjata Tjutu is good for kids as you can choose a walk to suit. You may see desert animals, reptiles and wildflowers on your way. You will need to pay a National Park entry fee which will cover you for a few days. Be sure to stop at the visitors information centre in the park and look into joining a walk or tour run by the local indiginous people. This region is absolutely beautiful, the desert colours are stunning and everchanging. We went to climb Ayers Rock and were hooked, we left three years later. I will take my children when I believe they are old enough to appreciate the natural beauty and handle the physical conditions. If you go autumn, winter or spring are best. Accomodation ranges from backpacker style dorms, tents, apartments through to luxury, there are a choice of restaurants. Thier are pools to keep you cool, a supermarket, bank, shops etc. This region is not cheap because of its isolation. |
