Sydney is home to Australia's famous Harbour bridge and Opera House and is the capital of New South Wales. Sydney is Australia's oldest and largest city with a population of around 4 million people.
The city boasts some of Australia best surf beaches, some well known names being Bondi and Manly. Sydney's surf beaches are plenty of fun but they can be dangerous due to swells and rips, so be prepared and do some research on Sydneys beaches on the Surf Life Saving Australia's site.
It is a busy but beautiful city and actually a great place to holiday with kids. You will find heaps to do and lots of it within walking distance of the CBD. The public transport system is good and with domestic flights to Sydney starting as low as $89, you may want to leave the car at home.
Sydney offers great restaurants, gardens and for most of the year, fantastic weather. Many of the attractions are cheap, such as the Powerhouse Museum, botanic gardens, visiting the Harbour Bridge, Opera House, riding on a ferry, checking out Darling Harbour, the Chinese Gardens, Paddy's Market, or lazing on a beach.
Taronga Zoo is a must do for families, it can be incorporated with a ferry and skyrail journey. If you are going to fly into Sydney, I would consider staying in the heart of the city, to save on transport costs. If you have a toddler a baby carrier would be an excellent investment.
Sydney can get hot from December to February but generally has temperatures around 28-30 degrees in summer and has a fairly mild winter but can get down around 10 degrees in July, August.
